Period God

Motion Capture Performance
Periods are often hidden, silenced, or treated with shame in society.

Through this project,
Period God hopes to confront sigmas around menstruation
and the female body in a way they could be seen, heard, and celebrated.

About Project

This video art is inspired by a vernacular spiritual figure in contemporary China: “姨妈神” (Period God).
Gaining popularity through social media, she is worshipped by female internet users
who call upon her to bring menstruation when it is delayed.
Despite her growing influence,
there exists no visual representation of her image.

The work envisions the Period God and creates a ritual of worship,
culminating in a dance through which she delivers menstruation to the believer.
This piece challenges traditional notions of divinity,
where gods are often distant and authoritative.
The Period God does not command from above;
she arrives through the body, through flow, through the blood.
